I draw on my deep thoughts and experiences in order to create work which is personal or political, using everyday materials, sometimes abject, sometimes waste. My techniques are simple and echo different aspects of my life.
I am inspired by the lives and work of Louise Bourgeois and Mona Hatoum, both of whom used body-like structures in their work. Whilst Bourgeois focused on the personal, Hatoum also addressed the political.
Though the art writer, Lucy Lippard, suggested that art must be generalised, detached from politics and pain, my work draws on and embodies these themes. My abstract sculptures give a nod to contemporary sculpture and Arte Povera, Josef Beuys, Richard Deacon and Veronica Ryan.
My recent ash paintings reflect my own musings on loss and grief.
