Breaking the Mould: Sculpture by Women Since 1945
Published by the Hayward Gallery, accompanying the Exhibition of the same, this book depicts key works over seventy years, supported by a detailed list of works, a catalogue essay and eleven short texts by successful women in art.
The timeframe mirrors the adult life of my Mom and me.  I note some familiar themes.
Early on, the limited expectations of and opportunities for women - something which was true for my Mom, whose roles were mostly those of wife, mother and family member.
Small numbers of women had the opportunity to experiment, very few succeeded but those who did became role models for others to follow.
With the development of ambition and achievement, there was greater representation as art students, artists and more widely across art.  This reflects the expectations my parents and school had of me and my joy in lifelong learning.
The chronology includes references to feminist texts, legislation, rights and equality including in education, gender identity, paternity and shared parental rights leave.
My daughter has benefitted from this history, these expectations, opportunities and rights which could be under threat politically.  I ponder how future women and women artists will fare and what their work will be about.
